- Lee,

- There have been quite a few suggestions about protection for LightWave 4.0.
- You said that you're considering a phone in registration. If that's the
- option Newtek decides to go with are they planning to hire more people to
- staff the phones. I've tried to get through to tech support there in the
- past and didn't have very good luck. This is going to be agravated by the
- fact that there will be thousands of customers trying to call just after
- the software is released. I can well imagine having to listen to a busy
- signal for hours if a call to Newtek is required. (then I'll have to listen
- to the recording that tells me that everyone's gone home and I'll have to
- waste another day trying to get through.
- Also, what's to stop 3 or 4 animators from splitting the cost of LightWave
- and having the registered owner call for registration? Unlike SGI's, PC's
- don't have a machine ID that the software can read. You couldn't generate
- the code based on the config.sys or the autoexec.bat since those can be
- changed by adding a hard drive or installing a game. I don't think Newtek
- wants to have to re-register every LightWave owner everytime they install
- something into thier machine.
-
- When you're deciding on what sort of protection you have to keep in mind
- who you're trying to stop from pirating the software. If you want to stop
- the hardcore pirate you can't. Whatever you do to protect it will be
- cracked within a month.
-
- If you're trying to stop the casual pirate it's a bit easier. My vote still
- goes for the CD-ROM key disk. At least you need a copy of the disc and
- CD-Recorders are still pretty expensive. If you go with a dongle it'll
- still be cracked only now that they don't need all the extra stuff that was
- on the CD the LightWave archive will be small enough to transfer with a
- modem.
- I notice in the back of Computer Graphics World that there are always a
- couple of companies that offer to remove the protection of programs such as
- 3D Studio or Topas. How long do you think it will be before they add
- LightWave to thier list? (sort of like LightRave)
-
- If you go with hardware you're go to have MAJOR support headaches simply
- because there are so many hardware combonations on PC's.
-
- Good luck!
